Heat Exchanger

What is Heat Exchanger?

In a gas furnace, the heat exchanger is the sealed metal chamber where combustion happens: burner flames heat the metal from inside while household air passes over the outside, keeping exhaust gases and breathing air completely separated. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into the airstream and is a genuine safety issue.

Why it matters in Arizona

Arizona furnaces run few hours, so heat exchangers here often age from thermal cycling and dust rather than heavy use. The annual fall inspection matters anyway — a crack doesn't care how mild the winter is, and CO exposure risk is the reason heating tune-ups exist.
