What is MERV Rating?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how well an air filter captures particles, on a scale from 1 to 16 for residential use — higher numbers catch finer particles. MERV 8 handles basic dust; MERV 11–13 captures fine dust, pollen, and most allergens.
Why it matters in Arizona
Desert fines are exactly the particle range where cheap filters fail, so MERV 11–13 is the sweet spot here — with a catch: in a 1-inch filter rack, high-MERV media can restrict airflow enough to hurt the system. A 4–5 inch media cabinet gives the capture without the choke.
