What is ERV / HRV?
ERVs and HRVs (energy/heat recovery ventilators) bring fresh outdoor air into a tightly sealed home while transferring heat — and, in an ERV, moisture — between the outgoing and incoming airstreams, so ventilation doesn't throw away the energy you paid to condition. An ERV exchanges both heat and humidity; an HRV heat only.
Why it matters in Arizona
For the desert, the ERV is the right variant: in summer it pre-cools and pre-dries incoming 110° air using the outgoing conditioned air. They matter most in newer, tightly built Greater Phoenix homes where “the house breathes on its own” is no longer true.
