SEER / SEER2

What is SEER / SEER2?

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how much cooling an air conditioner or heat pump delivers per unit of electricity across a season — higher is more efficient. It replaced the original SEER rating in 2023 with a tougher test that simulates real duct static pressure, so SEER2 numbers run slightly lower than old SEER numbers for the same hardware.

Why it matters in Arizona

The federal minimum for the Southwest is SEER2 14.3. With Greater Phoenix systems running 2,500+ hours a year, stepping up to SEER2 15.2–17 usually pays for itself; beyond that, returns depend on your ducts and insulation keeping up.
