Why filters matter more in the desert
The Greater Phoenix sits at the edge of open desert, and our air proves it: fine dust year-round, pollen through spring, and monsoon haboobs that can load a filter in a single storm. A clogged filter chokes airflow — the system blows warm, the coil can freeze, and the blower works overtime. It's the most preventable failure we see, and the cheapest one to avoid.
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how fine a particle the filter captures. Higher isn't automatically better: each step up adds airflow resistance, and an older blower pushing through a too-dense filter can lose more comfort than the dust ever cost. - MERV 8 is a solid baseline for a typical Greater Phoenix area home. Step up to MERV 11 for shedding pets, allergies, or homes near open desert where fine dust is constant. MERV 13 captures dander, pollen, and smoke-size particles — but it adds airflow resistance, so have a technician confirm your blower can handle it, especially on systems more than about ten years old.
- How often should I change my filter during monsoon season?
- Monthly, June through September. A single haboob can visibly load a 1-inch filter, and a clogged filter is the number-one preventable cause of the warm-air and frozen-coil calls we run every summer. Standard 1-inch filters otherwise last 30–60 days in Arizona; 4–5 inch media filters last 4–6 months but should still be checked monthly in monsoon season.
- Where do I find my filter size?
- It's printed on the filter's cardboard frame as length × width × depth in inches — for example 16x25x1. If the old filter is missing, measure the filter slot itself; the filter's nominal size is usually a half-inch larger than the exact opening. Or text us a photo and we'll identify it.
- Is a washable filter a good idea in the desert?
- Usually not. Most washable electrostatic filters rate around MERV 4–6 — too coarse for Arizona's fine dust — and any moisture left after rinsing invites microbial growth inside your return. A quality pleated disposable in the right MERV is cheaper insurance.
