Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?

An AC that runs constantly without dropping the temperature usually has an airflow problem (clogged filter, blocked coil, closed registers) or has lost refrigerant capacity. In Phoenix-area summers there's a third possibility: on 112°+ afternoons a correctly working system may only hold the house 18–22°F below outdoor temperature — that's a sizing reality, not a failure. Give it 2–3 hours, then re-check the vents

A dirty filter starves the system slowly, and recovery isn't instant — especially if the indoor coil iced up. If supply air turns properly cold (roughly 18–20°F colder than the return air), you found it.

Open every supply register and clear the returns

Walk the house: every supply vent open (even in unused rooms — closing them raises duct pressure and hurts the whole system), and nothing blocking the big return grilles — furniture, rugs, pet beds. Restricted returns starve the blower exactly like a dirty filter.

Look at the outdoor unit while the system runs

The condenser fan on top should be spinning and the unit should be blowing warm air upward. Clear leaves, palo verde debris, and anything within 2 feet of the coil. If the fins are caked in dust, you can gently rinse them with a garden hose (water only, unit OFF at the disconnect, spray outward-to-in from the top, never a pressure washer).

Arizona note: Monsoon dust storms coat condenser coils in a film that acts like a blanket. A caked coil on a 115° day can push head pressure high enough to trip the compressor on its internal overload.

Check the refrigerant lines for ice

Find the two copper lines entering the outdoor unit. Frost or ice on the larger (insulated) line — or visible ice on the indoor coil — means the system is freezing up. Airflow is ruled out, so the prime suspect is low refrigerant from a leak. Set cooling OFF and the fan to ON to thaw it (2–4 hours).

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Warm air from the vents comes down to four causes, in order of likelihood: the fan is set to ON so it blows between cooling cycles, the thermostat mode is wrong (or a heat pump reversing valve issue), the outdoor unit has lost power or failed, or the refrigerant circuit isn't doing its job. The first two are 30-second fixes at the thermostat — always start there.

Switch the fan from ON to AUTO

With the fan set to ON, the blower runs 24/7 — including the gaps between cooling cycles, when it circulates plain room-temperature air. That's the single most common "warm air" false alarm. On AUTO the blower only runs while the system is actually cooling.

Verify COOL mode and the setpoint

Confirm the mode is COOL and the setpoint is below room temperature. If you have a heat pump and the air is actually HOT (not just neutral), the reversing valve may be stuck in heating — that's a tech visit, but check the mode first; a family member or a schedule may have switched it.

Check whether the outdoor unit is running

Indoor blower running + outdoor unit silent = no cooling, just circulation. Check the AC breaker in your main panel (a double-pole breaker, usually 30–60A) and look for the outdoor disconnect box on the wall by the condenser — landscapers and painters pull those more often than you'd think.

Why won't my AC turn on at all?

A completely dead AC is almost always a power-path problem: dead thermostat batteries, a tripped breaker, a pulled outdoor disconnect, or — the one everybody misses in Arizona — a tripped condensate float switch that cuts the system off to stop a water leak. Work down the power path in that order before assuming the worst.

Is the thermostat screen alive?

A blank thermostat can't call for cooling. If the display is dead, replace the batteries (many models). If it's a hardwired or smart stat with no batteries, it powers from the system's 24V transformer — a blank screen then means the power path further down is broken, so keep going.

Check both breakers — indoor AND outdoor

Central systems usually have two: one for the air handler/furnace (blower) and one for the condenser. A tripped breaker sits between ON and OFF — flip it fully OFF, then ON. Also check the furnace/air-handler service switch (looks exactly like a light switch, often in the closet or attic near the unit — they get bumped).

Why is there ice on my AC refrigerant lines?

Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil means the coil is running below freezing — which only happens when airflow across it collapses (dirty filter, dead blower, blocked returns) or the refrigerant charge is low from a leak. Yes, even when it's 110° outside. Running it frozen can slug liquid refrigerant into the compressor and kill it, so the first move is always: cooling OFF, fan ON, thaw.

At the thermostat: system OFF (or FAN-only mode), fan ON. The blower pushes warm house air across the coil and melts the ice from the inside in 2–4 hours. Put towels around the indoor unit — melting ice makes real water.

Your AC pulls gallons of water out of the air every humid day, and it all leaves through one small PVC drain line. When that line clogs — algae, dust sludge, hard-water scale — the pan overflows and water shows up at ceilings, closets, and hallway walls. Why does my AC turn on and off every few minutes?

Why is my AC making loud or strange noises?

AC noises are diagnostic gold — each failure mode has its own sound. Grinding or metal screeching is motor bearings dying. A buzz that ends in a click is electrical (contactor or capacitor). Banging or thumping is something loose in the blower or a slipped fan. Hissing or gurgling is refrigerant escaping or bubbling through a low charge. Which sound is closest?

Trust your first instinct — homeowners identify these correctly far more often than they think. Note WHERE it's loudest, too: indoor unit, outdoor unit, or in the walls/ducts.

Buzzing: is the fan actually turning?

Go look at the outdoor unit while it buzzes. If it buzzes but the fan doesn't spin (or spins only if it's already coasting), the capacitor or contactor is failing — the buzz is a motor trying to start without its boost. If everything spins normally and it just hums loudly, worn isolation feet or a noisy contactor are likely.

Banging/rattling: pin down the source

Indoors, a thump at start/stop can be the blower wheel loose on its shaft — that one gets worse fast.

Vent popping is usually the ducts breathing

Metal ducts and grilles expand and contract with temperature swings — a pop or tick right at cycle start/stop is normal physics, louder in attics that hit 140°F. If it's new AND paired with weaker airflow, a duct may have partially collapsed or a damper slipped — worth a look at your next maintenance visit rather than an emergency.

Why does my AC smell bad when it runs?

Smells map to causes: a musty "dirty sock" odor is biofilm on the indoor coil or in the drain pan; an acrid electrical or burning-plastic smell is overheating wiring or a motor and means shut it down; a sulfur/rotten-egg smell in a home with gas appliances is treated as a gas leak, full stop.
